7 obstacles stopping you to start something new (aka why we don't like change)

When you have more resolve than doubts and fears, nothing can really stop you from striving.  This post is not about strengthening your resolve, but to explore the antagonist that is in the way.  Here are 7 obstacles that are stopping you from doing what you initially wanted:

The habitual underlying

In physics, the principle of inertia tells us that an object tends to preserve its present state whether it be resting or moving, meaning that it’s more difficult for an object at rest to move than a moving object to keep moving.  It resonate with the idiom, "first step is always the hardest”, and the old Chinese saying, “all things are difficult at the beginning” (萬事起頭難).  And a quote from Thomas Fuller says, “all things are difficult before they are easy”.

Or, in a more casual form, “keeping your shit together is HARD, but GETTING your shit together is harder.”

It's hard to start a new project; hard to get rid of that old habit; it's just hard to accept change.

Are they all the same phenomenon?  And WHY is it so damn DIFFICULT to start or change something?  I’ll explore the issue in the next post.

Look around and learn

I look at my dog and notice how content and carefree he is; he is completely living in the moment.
In comparison, I look cumbersome and unease in every possible way.

What is Karma?

Cause and effect.

Translate to real life: Past Choices x This Moment = Future Outcome

Future outcome then becomes your 'past choices' aka the condition that you're in and the cycle continues.

Past x Present = Future.

You can't escape your past, it's within you.

So stop telling me to let go of my past.
The past constructs who I am today,
and combine it with my present choice creates my future.

Let it go? Hold on?

People,
Stop telling people to let go.
'Letting go' is a non-action.
When people attempt to let go,
People just try to push it away.

But that's like
Pushing a dog away
While holding a bone in your hand.

《道德經》 Tao Te Ching: Chapter 1

The Tao that can be told
is not the eternal Tao.
The name that can be named
is not the eternal name.

The Tao is both named and nameless.
As nameless it is the origin of all things;
as named it is the Mother of 10,000 things.

Ever desireless, one can see the mystery;
ever desiring, one sees only the manifestations.
And the mystery itself is the doorway
to all understanding.

道可道,非常道,名可名,非常名。無名,天地之始,有名,萬物之母。故常無欲以觀其妙,常有欲以觀其徼,此兩者同出而異名,同謂之玄,玄之又玄,眾妙之門。
